Director of Research of Brunel Law School and Human Rights Expert

Dr. Alexandra Xanthaki is a Reader at Brunel Law School and the Director of Research of the Law School. A human rights expert, Alexandra is considered an internationally leading scholar on indigenous and cultural rights. Her monograph on Indigenous Rights and United Nations Standards: Self-determination, Culture and Land (Cambridge University Press) is considered a reference book.

She has also published on minority rights and cultural rights in international law. Her work is widely cited in the legal literature but also in United Nations documents. Her work has also had impact beyond academia: in 2015, her work formed the basis of a UN body recommendation on indigenous cultural heritage, while her opinion on indigenous rights and the World Bank was adopted as a state's position the same year. She has given keynote speeches around the world, including the Arctic Centre, Rovaniemi and the KL Bar, Malaysia.

She has worked closely with the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the UN Special Rapporteur on Indigenous Issues, the ILO and several international NGOs, including Minority Rights Group International. Alexandra is currently part of the Human Rights Faculty at Oxford University; she has also taught in Keele and Liverpool universities. At Brunel Alexandra convenes the human rights module and the multiculturalism and human rights module. She has been awarded a Brunel STAR award for her teaching and student support. She has also been engaged in human rights training of civil servants or activists in London, Ukraine, Pretoria and Vietnam.
